SURF CITY, NC (WWAY) -- For more than a decade now, people have gathered on the beach in Surf City to ring in the New Year in a cool way and this year was no exception. Cool, breezy weather and cold water are just the recipe for the Dolphin Dip.
A gray day at Surf City was brightened with lots of colorful characters.
“We’re at the Dolphin Dip extravaganza,” organizer Brian Moxey told WWAY. “It's our 11th annual event in Surf City, we’re expecting a huge crowd, lots of fun, and hour of jam packed fun and excitement. We go swimming at the stroke of noon.”
Dolphin Dip is a lot of fun but it is fun with a purpose, donations go to support military families.
“Hope for the Warriors is a nonprofit organization that was founded here in eastern North Carolina at Camp Lejeune,” Robin Kelleher explained. “We support wounded service members, their families and the families of the fallen.”
Surf City Mayor Zander Guy took his position on high, and it was off with the jackets and into the cold water. Many plungers came in costume.
“I got married on New Year’s Day and I’m divorced now so I decided to take the plunge.” Gail Birkby said while wearing her wedding gown.
Brian Moxey hopes to beat the record crowd of five thousand people who took the plunge last year. This year had a good crowd, no word yet on how many jumped in to the ocean at Surf City on New Year's Day
